If your battery-powered camera isn’t charging (won't hold charge or turns off when unplugged), don’t worry, this guide will walk you through every possible cause and fix. Your camera uses a USB port that supports charging via a solar panel, Power Hub/Base Station, or a USB charger.

Things to Prepare

Pick Your Starting Point

Choose what’s happening with your camera to jump straight to the right section:

How to Fix It?

Camera Only Works When Charging

If your battery-powered camera can only stream while charging, this usually means the battery is not longer holding charge.

Why this happens? The camera receives power (blue LED on), but the internal battery cannot store it, causing it to shut down once external power is removed.

Quick Check

  1. Confirm the blue LED appears while charging – this verifies the charger and cable are working.
  2. Unplug the camera, and try to stream.
    • If you can't stream when unplugged, the battery is faulty and needs replacement.

Next Step: Proceed to Warranty & Replacement Options

Check Power & LED
  1. Turn ON your MaxRanger4K™ camera / Turn ON your standalone camera
    • When the camera is ON and charging, the LED turns blue.
    • (For MaxRanger4K™ camera only) If the camera is OFF, you won’t see any LED indicator, even if it’s charging.
    • Why this helps? Ensures you’re correctly interpreting the LED behavior. See LED indicator guide

  2. Connect the camera to your charger or Power Hub/Base Station using the included USB cable.
Test Charger and Cable

Make sure that the camera is turned ON and the cable connection is secure.

If you’re using a USB charger, follow these tests to find out which part might be faulty.

  1. Are you using a fast charger or USB PD? Stop! Use a different charger.
    • A fast charger or USB PD may not charge your camera, and it's unclear whether the device is designed to support charging through those methods.
    • For MaxRanger4K™ cameras, connect it to the USB port of your Hub or Station.
Still no blue LED? Proceed here →

  2. Try the same charger and cable on another camera
    • If the another camera charges, the previous camera may be faulty.

  3. Try the same charger and camera, but use a different USB-C cable
    • If it charges, your previous cable is faulty.

  4. Try the same cable and camera, but use a different charger or connect to the Power Hub or Base Station's USB port
    • If it charges, your charger is faulty.

Why this helps? Step-by-step isolation helps identify whether the issue lies in the charger, cable, or camera.

Check Power Hub/Base Station Connection

Make sure that the camera is turned ON and the cable connection is secure.

If you’re charging directly from your Power Hub or Base Station’s USB port, try these:

  1. Charge another camera using the same cable connected to the Power Hub or Base Station
    • If it works, the previous camera is faulty.

  2. Use a different cable to charge the same camera to the Power Hub or Base Station
    • If it works, your previous cable is faulty.

Why this helps? Confirms whether the issue is with the camera or the connection hardware.

Warranty & Replacement Options

After identifying the faulty component:

  • If the included cable or camera is faulty and within warranty, contact Swann Support for a replacement.
  • If out of warranty, you can purchase a new USB cable or replacement camera.

Important Reminders:

  1. If you used a third-party USB cable and it’s found faulty, always switch back to the included cable.
  2. If you’re using a charger, check its output rating.
    • If it exceeds the camera’s input rating (see this guide), STOP USING IT! — it can damage the battery long-term.
    • Instead, use the Power Hub or Base Station’s USB port to safely charge (see recommended method).

Summary / Next Steps

By now, you should have identified whether the issue is with your camera, charger, cable, or Power Hub/Base Station connection.

If the camera still doesn’t charge after all these checks, reach out to Swann Support with your test results to get assistance and potential warranty replacement.
