Full Error Message:
We are sorry we cannot connect to the device at this time. Please contact Swann technical support (Missing parameters)
Choose Your System
This guide helps resolve the “Missing Parameter” error during camera setup, a common issue when pairing a
- Standalone camera to Wi-Fi with incorrect settings; OR
- An outdated EliteX™ recorder which is not fully compatible with the latest Swann Security app
Things to Prepare
- Your phone is connected to Wi-Fi
- You have your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password ready
- Your camera is powered on and ready to pair
Troubleshooting Steps
Connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
All Swann standalone cameras are designed to work with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. If your phone is connected to a 5 GHz network, pairing may fail with a “Missing Parameter” error.
- Open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings
- Identify your available Wi-Fi networks
- Connect to the 2.4 GHz version of your network
- Return to the camera setup process and try pairing again
Why this helps? 2.4 GHz networks provide broader compatibility with smart devices like security cameras, while 5 GHz is often unsupported.
If your Wi-Fi SSID supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time and you phone keeps connecting to the 5 GHz, visit this article to learn how to connect to the 2.4 GHz
OPTIONAL: Temporarily disable 5 GHz band, then turn it back on once done with the setup.

Having a dedicated IoT SSID avoids interference, improves stability, and makes troubleshooting easier.
Remove Special Characters in Wi-Fi Name or Password
Special characters (e.g., ! @ # $ % ^ & *) in your Wi-Fi name (SSID) or password can sometimes cause pairing errors.
How to Change It?
WARNING: Changing you SSID and password will disconnect devices that are already connected to your Wi-Fi. Proceed with caution, and make sure to set up your other devices to connect again to the Wi-Fi
- Access your router settings
- Locate your Wi-Fi configuration
- Update the SSID and/or password to remove special characters
- Save changes and reconnect your phone to the updated network
- Retry camera pairing
- If it failed, reboot the camera and router
Why this helps? Some devices have limited compatibility with special characters, which can prevent proper data transmission during setup.
Set Wi-Fi Security to WPA/WPA2
Security cameras typically support WPA/WPA2 encryption, but not WPA3-only networks.
How to Change It?
- Log into your router settings
- Navigate to Wireless Security Settings
- Change the security mode to:
- WPA2 or
- WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode
- Save changes and reconnect your phone to the network
- Retry pairing your camera
- If it failed, reboot the camera and router

Why this helps? WPA3 is not backward compatible with many devices, including some security cameras, preventing successful connection.
Summary & Next Steps
By now, you’ve:
- Ensured your phone is on a 2.4 GHz network
- Removed special characters from Wi-Fi credentials
- Adjusted your router to WPA2 or mixed security mode
These are the most common causes of the “Missing Parameter” error and typically resolve the issue quickly.
If the problem persists:
- Restart your camera, phone, and router
- Try setup using a different mobile device
- Contact Swann Technical Support for advanced assistance
Things to Prepare
- Your NVR is powered on and online.
Visit this article to check if the recorder is online - You have access to the NVR’s local menu (mouse and monitor are connected)
Choose Where to Start
Use the options below to jump directly to the section that matches what you’re seeing:
- I see a “Missing Parameter” error in the Swann Security app →
- I’m not sure if my NVR is online →
- My NVR is online but pairing still fails →
- I already updated the firmware but still see the error →
Troubleshooting Steps
Confirm the NVR Is Online
Before checking firmware or re-pairing, confirm that your recorder is properly connected to the internet.
- The recorder must be connected to your router/modem, with internet connection, using an Ethernet cable.
- The "Globe" and "Cloud" icons must have a green check symbol indicating that the recorder is online. See screenshot below.
Full details to make the recorder go online is in this article
Why this helps? The Swann Security app communicates with your recorder through the internet. If the NVR is offline, pairing and updates cannot complete correctly. Double-check the connections and reboot everything if necessary.
Check for a Firmware Update (Online Upgrade)
If your NVR is online and you’re seeing the Missing Parameter error, the recorder may need a firmware update.
Why an update is needed (brief explanation): Firmware updates help your recorder communicate smoothly with newer versions of the Swann Security app by improving performance, reliability, and feature compatibility.
How to Check for an Online Upgrade
On your recorder, go to Maintenance > Upgrade > Online Upgrade
Click Check to look for an available over-the-air (OTA) update.
Once a newer firmware version appears, click Upgrade if an update is available.
When the Confirmation prompt appears, click Confirm to proceed with the update
Firmware upgrade will start and once done, it will reboot the recorder.
Important: Update the recorder to firmware version N31_A9713_V2.1.8260119_R7 or newer.
If No Update Is Available
- Restart the NVR
- Check the Online Upgrade menu again
- Confirm the NVR is still online
Once the update is complete, allow the NVR to fully reboot before moving on.
Optional Step
In the event that after the firmware update, you still can't see your cameras or still getting "Missing Parameters" error, close the app and open it again
Still the same? Try the step below:
Unpair and Re-Pair the Recorder in the Swann Security App
After updating the firmware, you’ll need to remove the recorder from the app and pair it again.
How to Re-Pair
- Scan the recorder's QR code again using the Swann Security app
- Enter its username and password (same password used during the Startup Wizard on the recorder)
- Follow on-screen instructions
Why this helps? Re-pairing refreshes the connection between the app and the recorder, allowing the app to recognize the updated firmware correctly.
If the Error Still Appears
- Force close and reopen the app
- Confirm the firmware version again
- Restart both the phone and the NVR
Summary & Next Steps
If you encountered a Missing Parameter error after pairing your EliteX™ NVR:
- Confirmed the NVR is online
- Updated the recorder to N31_A9713_V2.1.8260119_R7 or newer
- Unpaired and re-paired the device in the Swann Security app
